June was born as Shirley Luster in Springfield Illinois. When Anita O'Day left the Kenton Orchestra she applied for the job got it and changed her name to June Christy. She later in 1957 on December 30th she appeared on the first sponsered Jazz concert on TV. The Timex Jazz show featured Louis Armstrong, Carmen McRae, Duke Ellington and Gene Krupa along with June.
