Description
1773 Silas Pepoon established a small tavern under the sign of the Red Lion.
1774 Citizens from several Berkshire towns gathered at Pepoon’s to pass resolutions protesting England’s repressive Act of Intolerance and also pledged to boycott British goods.
1848 Known as The Stockbridge House, an addition was made to greatly enlarge the Inn to provide more adequate facilities.
1862 Purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Plumb. Mrs. Plumb was an ardent collector. We can thank her for much of the fine antique furniture and china in the Inn today.
1884 New addition and entire roof raised to add a third story. The Inn was then able to accommodate 100 guests.
1891 The name of the Inn was changed from The Stockbridge House to Ye Red Lion Inn.
1893 Charles H. Plumb relinquished management of the Inn to his nephew, Allen T. Treadway.
1896 Fire destroyed the entire building, but Mrs. Plumb’s noted collection was saved.
1897 The rebuild hotel opened with a new hydraulically powered Otis elevator.
1908 Roof burned off the Inn and a slate roof replaced.
1916 Allen T. Treadway, Congressman from 1913-1944, inherited the Inn from his Uncle, Charles H. Plumb.
1934 After being a dry establishment for 90 years, the Inn begins to serve liquor.
1937 Lion’s Den opened by Heaton I. Treadway as a surprise for his father, Allen T. Treadway.
1947 Allen T. Treadway died. Son, Heaton I. Treadway assumes ownership.
1955 Treadway family sold the Inn to Byrne Bauer, ending the 90 year ownership of the Inn by one family. Mr. Bauer also announced first wintertime opening of the Inn.
1956 The Inn was redecorated, repainted, recarpeted & refurnished, new chandeliers in lobby.
1959 Ownership of the Inn reverted back to Heaton I. Treadway.
1960 Purchased by Robert K. Wheeler of Great Barrington. A new canopy entrance to Lion’s Den, new slate roof, 34 unit, three-story Motor Lodge added, heated swimming pool and adjoining social room (pool house), showers, and dressing rooms.
1968 Stockbridge residents Jack and Jane Fitzpatrick purchased the Inn and moved their successful mail order company, Country Curtains, into the building.
1969 The Inn reopened in May, and has been operating year-round ever since.
