Description
Heirloom Apples (Black-gilliflower, holstein, roxbury-russet, knobbed-russet, winter-banana, calville-blanc-d'hiver, hudson's-golden-gem, black-oxford, orleans-reinette) are apples that have their roots back through the ages.
Apple trees are heterozygotes, meaning that apple trees don't resemble their parents when planted from seed. Instead, apple trees are grown by grafting the fruit of an existing, established variety onto an existing root or tree.
Hailed as the rarest tree in the world (1000 years old) it is perhaps all that remains of the monastic orchard. It is the only apple variety from the Celtic welsh heartland. On the island both tree and fruit are completely disease free.
Cook's Illustrated the great culinary publication is the source of this photo. John Burgoyne illustrated the back cover of the magazine. If you love to cook this publication is a must.
